This place exceeded my expectations. Our server Clinton was top notch!

Ok we had the chicken fried steak and oh man was it good. The gravy was fantastic.

I loved the decor. The food was portioned huge for a great price and service was great and attentive. A great homestyle place in Johnson City.

The food was okay but did not have much flavor. I am not sure I understand why so many places dont use any seasoning or spices to cook with. Everything was bland. I had Chicken Fried steak which I thought was good. Not great as advertised. There was so much extra crust you could have used it for another full size steak. Too much crust not enough steak. My husband had the country club which he thought was great. The service was slow but she was nice. There was a goupg of 8 next to us with a child that screamed almost the entire meal. The lady at the front doing the register was super nice. Love the menu. Cute idea.

Super slow service. Bland food. Seems like a great small town meeting place for locals ... but not for tourists on a time crunch or who like food with flavor.

Ordered 3 chicken fried steak sandwiches with cheese, 3 onion rings, 3 ice teas. Tasteless food. Missing cheese. Very weak tea. Overpriced. $19.00 each.

Stopped here for some mighty fine breakfast. First meal inside a restaurant since COVID shutdowns. When I normally try somewhere that claims they have the best "insert food" here in Texas, the usually just mean the biggest - not best quality. I was happy this was not the case with HCC! My chicken fried steak was cooked perfectly with light breading, tasty gravy, and a very reasonable portion. I had the "Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast" with scrambles eggs, a homemade biscuit, and homestyle potatoes. Everything was fresh and delicious. Service was great and coffee was strong ☕

I make a point of eating anywhere that claims to have best-in-world food. As I sped down the highway I saw the sign and in that moment committed to stop on the way back. I did. I ordered. I ate. I was filled. But more than that, my waitress was super nice, attentive and genuinely a cool person. If the food and friendliness at the Cupboard are indicative of all Johnson City then we’ll need to come by (not just through) again!Now, as for best chicken fried steak in the world? Well, it was mighty fine. How ‘bout that?

Long wait and rather mundane atmosphere. Food was good. Blackberry cobbler was worth waiting for.

Good food, homestyle country cooking, fair prices.I've eaten here at least once in the past. This is a well known restaurant at an intersection frequented by both travelers and locals. The menu has a wide selection of food of which contains the chicken fried steak.I've had many a person comment to me about eating here, so I decided to give it another try. The first time I visited it was early in the morning. This time it was lunch so we ordered 3 chicken fried steaks.Our order came out pretty quick and all the portions were plentiful. I ordered fried okra and mashed potatoes with mine. My only criticism was that all the food lacked salt and spices of any kind. The gravy seemed overly bland. After a bit of salt and pepper the flavor improved but I felt like it could have been better.Overall the meal was good, service was great, and portions were more than filling. But as far as being impressed, I felt it was just decent.

I tried to review from map it is not on the map but comes up as search. Food is great! Hospitality is spot on. I saw someone asked to leave because they had their service dog on the table a service dog owner should know the rules and I think the owner was in the right on this issue. They apologized to me even though I did not feel offended. Tables are cool and so is the building with the quote nearly 3 dozen served! You should stop here you should stop here. I submitted the stop again because it’s not on the maps.

Best chicken fried steak around. Crisp tasty crust and tender meat, perfect gravy. 1st class homemade desserts. This little jewel is highly recommended next time you're in central Texas. The people are friendly and the food is excellent.

Meh. Zero service and chicken bites/mashed potatoes/fries were all bland. Got Sat, got drinks, never got the lime/lemon I asked for, and then server dropped off the bill (before we for our food) and said she was going on break and someone else would bring food. Well someone else did bring food BUT no one EVER checked on us/followed up. Finished food, paid, no tip, left.

For what it is it's great. Don't expect spectacular service. Chicken fried steak was quite good but sides were average. I have a craving for another chicken fried steak so I'll go back even though it's a twenty five Mile drive. Local character and small town diner charm.

Delicious greasy foods. If you love hole-in-the-wall cafes you will love this place.

Large country style meals are great for long trips out of the city. The cook here seemed to know how to make classic country favorites delicious and the food is served in large portions.

Really neat place to go and visit! Still snacking on my pecan brittle. Their sandwiches looked delicious. Lots of deli items to pick from. STOP and give these guys a visit.

I ordered the country fried chicken. My stomach was queasy by time I located the chicken in all that batter. Took half the meal home and fed it to my German Shepherd ... who thoroughly enjoyed it. Probably was not a good idea eating peach ice cream in Stonewall then ordering chicken fried chicken forty minutes later. That peach ice cream was really GOOD! My husband enjoyed his chicken fried chicken meal. He wanted to order another one.

Food was fantastic but service is very, very slow. We were told a 15 minute wait for 2 and it was 35 minutes. The lady that took our order was very rushed. We tried the chicken fried steak which was one of the best I have ever had. I had the ultimate biscuits and gravy with amazing sausage. Do not get the grits, no amount of salt, pepper or butter could save those.

Im sorry but the food was horrible. Good ranch an salad but the steak was horrible and not worth the $21. The so called “The Best Chicken Fried Steak” was a disappointment and needed a ton of salt for flavor. The mashed potatoes came from a box and tasted like water. Very very disappointed but the server was nice. I do not recommend this place.

Great spot for real southern food. I recommend the chicken fried steak.

Special place for us to go. I gain 10 pounds just walking in the door. The display counter as you enter is filled with assorted candies and baked goods. Enter the dining area, hitting you in the face is this bigger than life board listing pies and more pies. A few cakes are also on the list. The menu comes on brown paper bags. They have a lunch special that is served till 2:00 daily. Not sure about weekends. Southern comfort dishes are the main choices on the menu.

Good chicken fried steak and the country fried potatoes were a great choice. Good prices and friendly staff. Good stop for a meal going through Johnson City. Wife loved the peach cobbler

Excellent service provided by Clinton. The fried chicken steak is a must try along with their mimosas. Their serving sizes were very generous and I would definitely recommend if you are passing by Johnson City.

Great breakfast. They claim to have the WORLD'S best chicken fried steak. Not sure about world's best but it's dang good. Yes had the chicken fried steak with breakfast. 😋 Great staff. We'll be back.

My wife and I had breakfast here this morning while passing through town, and were greeted promptly and the food and service were absolutely great.

Use to be my wife and I favorite place to stop heading back to Copperas Cove from Kerrville visiting our son in college but know more. We ordered the Jalapeno burgers with fries and after one bite we noticed the meat was not cooked and no Jalapenos what so ever. My wife called over the waitress and showed her the raw meat plus was not a Jalapeno burger and the fries were awful taste like they were half cooked and she offered to replace it but I said know and give money to wife to pay bill as I went out by my car for a smoke for was upset with the order. How ever the waitress did cut bill amount to little over $10. I DO NOT blame any of this on our waitress for she was really sorry. They need a new cook however. One last thing my wife and I were sick time we got home. Never Again and that use to be a great place to eat

This place is great! Food tastes homecooked. Peach cobbler was awesome. Took a coworker here who is somewhat picky and he loved it. It's a tad bit on the expensive side but well worth it.

I visited this place during the holiday season 2019-2020. The place was cozy, friendly, and welcoming 😃The chicken fried steak does not disappoint and the portions are way too huge 😅😁The server was very friendly and she checked on my table in a very prompt and timely manner the ordered food was served very quickly 😋The server was a good help to get directions to the court house where the Christmas were located 🙂 and on top of this, the server shared some home made banana nut cup cakes that her mom had made for her 😍 they were delicious and I was satisfied with my choice of eating the chicken fried steak here 😁 Cheers 🍻

Haven't been here in a while, but it is still a delightful rest stop. Appetizer fried mushrooms were yummy. Our party got the fried catfish, fried shrimp, and jalapeno reuben sandwich. All were delicious! Service was fast and friendly, restrooms were clean. We'll be back!

It's an awesome place with great people

They seated us and then did not talk to us for 20+ minutes. The restaurant wasn’t busy in the slightest. We gave the server eye contact yet she still continued to leave us there waiting. She was too busy wiping down a single table and talking with another member of the staff. We just left and none of them cared.
